When the Mormons came into Salt Lake Valley and wanted the Ute's land, Wakara and Arapeen, Ute leaders, lead Utes to enroach settlers with a series of raids. The so-called Walker War resulted n some Mormon and many more Ute casualties an began the process of Ute displacement. Because Mormons wanted the Ute's land, they had to fight for it.

As the Utes moved into the Uintah Reservation, the whites began to occupy it too. This caused the hunting game to become scarce. Ute leader Black Hawk intensified the raiding of nearby settlements, seizing livestock and supplies. Black Hawk agreed to peace in 1868, although some of his followers continued the raids until 1872.
